Updated. Moving C&P Michigan to DC - need help in DC

My son wants to move his grandfather’s print shop from Michigan to DC. There are about 220 cases of type and a 8x12 old style Chandler & Price press. I am posting this to both the Briar Press site and the Green Dolphin Press site hoping for suggestions and advice. More details below.

My son definitely expects to move the type himself in a U-Haul, but is debating about moving the press. Allied Moving has said they can move it, but he is wondering how experienced they really are for this type of work. Michigan riggers won’t take it to DC, and we haven’t been able to get a price on their just loading it.

Some members of my father’s old printing group have volunteered to give advice and help on the Michigan end. They have now seen the situation and say it is feasible for my son to move the press with the type, so we have the loading covered.

However, that means that we still need to get it off in DC where it will go down 5 concrete steps into the basement. There is about 4 feet between the end of the steps to the basement door. Then it can go straight into the basement, but will need to be turned to get to where it will be placed.

We have only removed the fly wheel and two smaller wheels on the right side and the ink plate. Since my son has had no experience assembling a press, he hesitates to take it apart very much. The Michigan printers have suggestions about a couple other pieces that could be removed, but they won’t be in DC to be sure they are replaced properly. Perhaps if we knew some printers in the DC area, he would feel more confident about disassembling it further.

I’ve called riggers from the DC phone book, but haven’t had any response. It would be good to hear of any experience as to which companies are good (or bad). However, if possible we would prefer to find a couple printers with experience who could help unload the press. This would be any time Wednesday August 15. If you live in the area and can help, please let me know. If I can’t get together a crew here in DC, there is no point in loading the press in Michigan.

Thanks in advance for your replies.
